1966년: Alper라는 과학자는 UV를 이용한 實驗에서 감염성이 있는 물질은 virus보다도 크기가 작다는 사실 밝힘.
1992년: Kellings는 highly purified scrapie 감염물질에서 nucleic acid를 검출하는데 실패하였다. 즉 단백질만으로 전염성을 지니며 스스로를 복제할 수 있다는 理論이다.
