Tessie Hutchinson was in the center of a cleared space by now, and she held her hands out desperately as the villagers moved in on her. `It isn`t fair,` she said. A stone hit her on the side of the head. Old Man Warner was saying, `Come on, come on, everyone.` Steve Adams was in the front of the crowd of villagers, with Mrs. Graves beside him.
`It isn`t fair, it isn`t right,` Mrs. Hutchinson screamed, and then they were upon her.

Shirley Jackson 의 The Lottery 라는 작품의 원본에 대한 해석을 하였습니다. 만발한 꽃은 향을 내뿜고 있었으며 잔디는 짙푸른 색깔을 띠고 있었다. 다른 마을에서는 주민들의 수가 너무 많아서 제비뽑기를 하는데 이틀이 걸리므로 제비뽑기는 보통 6 월 26 일 아침에 처음 하게 되어 있다 그러나 3 백명 남짓한 사람들이 살고 있는 이 마을에서는 제비뽑기를 처음 해도 마을사람들은 정오 때쯤 집으로 돌아가 점심식사를 할 수가 있을 정도였다.
